Shanghai Design Biennale: “Intelligent Streetlight” Displays Creativity

On September 3, the result of “Edison Cup” Shanghai Undergraduate Intelligent City Industry Design Competition held by GE (General Electric) Chinese Research and Development Center, Shanghai Science and Technology Committee and energy enterprise“Current”subordinated to GE was announced at 2016 Shanghai Design Biennale. A batch of creative works were emerged around the themeof “Intelligent Streetlight”, some teams from six Shanghai colleges and universities designed it to be the module which can be assembled independently like LEGO, and others added convenient functions of navigation guidance and one-key alarm. Gu Guodong, General Manager of Consulting Department of GE Chinese Research and Development Center said that, on one hand, the purpose of holding the competition is to collect the design creativity of undergraduates for the intelligent streetlight, on the other hand, it is also to build one exchange platform for undergraduates, so that they could apply their knowledge and have opportunity to touch the world first-class enterprise.


Undergraduates provide creativity for intelligent city project

According to the introduction, there are two topics for the competition: “intelligent streetlight industry design based on Industrial Internet of Things” and “graphic  design of intelligent streetlight remote management panel webpage faced to Industrial Internet application”, and they come from the “Intelligent City” project of Yujiabao, Tianjin undertaken by Current Company. The students participating in the competition should design the function, appearance and remote management panel of intelligent streetlight, and combine with the practical situation of pavement for intelligent visualization display, including surroundings monitoring of streetlight, overall energy consumption and energy consumption of single light. The design model is presented by printing of 3D printer.

In the display link, the representatives of 7 teams participating in the competition made speeches in turn, after being scored by the judge, Sun Shifan team and Lin Jinyu team obtained the first prize of intelligent streetlight design and intelligent streetlight urban application respectively. Sun Shifan is a junior student of Shanghai Polytechnic University, and he told the journalist that the largest feature of the intelligent streetlight designed by their team is modularization. The streetlight is composed of five parts of information issue module, charging pile module, interaction module, integrated management module and light cluster system. Each module is independent, and they can be combined freely like LEGO. And the information issue module includes parking instruction system, the information of roadside spare parking space is collected byRFID (radio frequency identification) technology, and then it is published on the special prompt screen. “The prompt screen is equipped with virtual parking space projection lamp, and it can emit laser projection downward at night, and mark the temporary parking link for private car. We want to take advantage of the resources of open road at night to resolve the difficulty of parking private car to some extent.”

Lin Jinyu, a senior student of Shanghai Dianji University, created the remote management panel webpage of intelligent streetlight, and he leaded his team to design a data interface understood by non-professionals. After many attempts, they decided to use different colors of ellipses for arrangement and directly display the electric power of a group of streetlights: the white ellipse represents to be within the safety scope, and the red ellipse represents failure.

Zhang Chao, the principal of Asia-Pacific Region of Current intelligent city, said that the practicability and applicability of the product are two standards of competition judgment. “Some streetlights designed by the competitors have a great many functions and complex appearance, but if they are input into the industrial production, the cost will be very high. However, the modular design of the award-winning team is flexible like commodity on the supermarket shelves, the difference regions can select independently according to different demands.”It is reported that the award-winning competitor will not only obtain the bonus, but also go to Tianjin to visit “Intelligent City” project, and GE Chinese Research and Development Center will elect internship from the prizewinners.

Abica robot provides independent guidance service

At Shanghai Design Biennial, various robots promoted by “Creative Special Train” and “Creative 123” platform also attracted the sights of audience. The platform was planned by Shanghai Landao Media and built by multiple science parks, incubator bases and communities and alliances, and it focused on creative highlight and integrated the entrepreneurship resource through creative release and round-table dialogue. Cai Min, the founder of the platform, said that she hoped “Creative 123” platform could run in different cities like train and carry more and more partners.

The platform exhibit “Abica robot” obtained the creative design award of appraisal activity of exhibitors. Because the traditional positioning scheme is inaccurate indoor, the research and development team applies ultrasonic wave, deep camera, infrared and other sensors as well as independently designed algorithm to assist positioning and avoid obstacles. The robot owns the functions of guiding users, providing entertainment and real-time monitoring, and it can make voice interaction with users. After the cruising model is opened, the robot can cruise independently in the field, and introduce the basic information of the field. You can obtain the service of the robot as long as you stand in front of it or call it, so it can not only save the human cost, but also increase the enjoyment. According to the introduction, Abica robot has been appeared at multiple exhibitions, and it intends to be put into Shanghai Daning International Square for probation during “National Day”.
