First Donghu Maker Fair

On May 28th, 2016, the First Donghu Maker Fair and China Maker Alliance Launching Ceremony opened in the Optics Valley Stadium of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and was attended by Director Zhang Zhihong of the Torch High Technology Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Hu Lishan, member of the Wuhan CPC Standing Committee and Secretary of the Party Working Committee of the East Lake High-tech Development Zone. More than 70 maker spaces across China participated with over 1000 maker entries, together with around 12 thousand onsite visitors and over 20 thousand online viewers.

Under the theme of “Thinking with your hands, everyone is a maker”, guided by Administrative Committee of Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone and Wuhan Science and Technology Bureau, sponsored by Wuhan · China Optics Valley Maker Alliance and China Maker Space Union(CMSU), the event consisted of four parts, namely theme forum, professional exhibition, onsite experience, and creativity workshop. Focusing on maker ecology, maker service and economy, and maker space operation, the first Donghu Maker Fair explored and discussed ways to carry forward maker spirits, promote maker movements in China, create Chinese maker ecology, and improve maker service system in China. The forum included main session and sub-session. The main session, under the theme of “China Maker Ecology Summit Forum” and “China Maker Service and Tool Summit Forum and Product Launch and Crowdfunding”, thoroughly discussed innovation service, maker investment, enterprise transformation, and the development of maker education and maker space. Open source hardware development and product design in the maker era, open source community and maker development, and supply chain solution in the maker era were also studied. In the sub-session, under the theme of “China Maker Space Operation Summit Forum”, many makers, including Beijing Makerspace founder Wang Shenglin, COCOSPACE founder Wei Feng, CEO of Haier’s iHaier Liu Changwen, CMSU president Zheng Yanfeng, and pc Duino partner Donald, shared their thoughts and experiences regarding maker development.

During the first Donghu Maker Fair, exhibiting products such as robots, VR/AR technologies, innovative medical products, smart life products and educational products were very popular among visitors. The charm of maker products and the creativity of makers were shown to the general public through all-round exhibition of various maker products and real-time presentation, complementing the carnival’s concept of “Thinking with your hands, everyone is a maker”, thus fostering maker climate and spreading maker spirit.

Second Donghu Maker Fair

In the morning of March 26th, 2017, the second “Donghu Maker Fair” Smart Robot Feature Event opened in Wuhan. There were 41 site exhibition booths showcasing altogether more than 1800 products. Robots of various types, forms and functions were the focuses of the event site. By 5 p.m. that day, more than 8000 person-time participated in the event.

It is understood that Donghu Maker Fair was run under a new project operating model, integrating innovation experience, centralized exhibition, product launch and promotion, and summit forum. It was a platform of innovation and entrepreneurship where regional innovators and local citizens were provided with product promotion, innovation experience and Sci-tech innovation services. Following the first Donghu Maker Fair held on May 28th last year, the second Donghu Maker Fair carried forward its tradition of advocating the lifestyle of “turning creativity into reality” through hands-on experience and participation, as well as hand making, which served as the basis for creating spot-on smart robot feature event as it explored more innovative ways of organization.
