Release time:2017-08-05 11:29

On October 27, 2016, the Wuhan Art Class (International Open Class) was organized in the atrium of Wuhan Art Museum. The Korean contemporary artist Kin Chengren and the Wuhan artist Liu Chang have given an interactive art class named as “Picture Dictation” for dozens of children and art college students.

During the class, various frames and easels were placed on the atrium of Wuhan Art Museum. After this open class was began, 41 instructions of drawing and coloring, such as "Please draw a face on the upper part of the center of the canvas", "Please draw two straight lines under the chin", "Please link the left shoulder with the lower right corner of the canvas with a line", were sent by the loudspeaker to direct students to draw a half-length photo of a woman. Those instructions were quite specific. For example, the length of the line and the color to be used were clearly stipulated, and the location where students were required to draw pictures was also accurated to centimeters. Students took over half an hour to draw the picture by listening to instruction while there was still a tremendous difference among finished works.

Jin Chengren is a Korean image artist and an animation director. He told reporters that the idea of “Picture Dictation” was newly created in recent two years and this interactive class has been organized for 5 times in Beijing and Wuhan. “This class is more an artistic experiment than a teaching class in a real sense, and the painting process can stimulate students to think.” “Picture Dictation” aims to enlighten students by requiring students to draw pictures by following various detailed and mechanized instructions intentionally. Some students may follow instructions seriously while some others may choose to draw the picture as they wish. No choice is wrong. However, works finished by them will be definitely distinctive. This whole process will enlighten them to think about art. What’s art? What’s artistic creation? They will find their own answers.

According to the Director of the Public Education Department of Wuhan Art Museum, Wuhan Art Class (International Open Class) is a special public educational event developed by Wuhan Art Museum. This event has been organized for 4 times in this year. Artists from America, France and Japan have been invited to give lessons in order to enlighten young art lovers by introducing the novel teaching mode and artistic concept. This event aims to make young art lovers to understand that the most important thing of art is creativity.
