School of Urban Design at Wuhan University
The School of Urban Design was formed by combination of the architecture, urban planning, art design and graphic centers of the original Wuhan University (WHU), Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering and Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping (WTUSM) in December 2000. The industrial design major was included into the School of Urban Design after major adjustment in 2003 and the School hence formed a complete design system containing planning design, architectural design, industrial design and art design. Relying on the foundations of multiple disciplines of literature, history, philosophy, economy, law, management, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and education and by virtue of the profound academic atmosphere and cultural heritage of WHU, the School has gradually formed the culture-based, digitalized, international and creative industry-based school-running characteristics.
The School now has such five scientific research and teaching units as Department of Urban and Rural Planning, Department of Architecture, Department of Design, Department of Graphics and Digital Technology and Art and Design Experimental Center and the auxiliary units like Office of the Party and Administration Office, Office of Teaching Management, Office of Expansion and Library. The School now has 120 teachers, including 22 professors, 59 associate professors and 16 supervisors of doctoral candidates. More than 20 teachers have obtained master degree and doctor degree from overseas famous universities. It has postdoctoral research institute on urban and rural planning, doctor station of two first-level disciplines: architecture and urban and rural planning and six programs for master degree of architecture, urban and rural planning, design science, digitalized design and simulation, industrial design project and construction and civil engineering. Architecture and urban and rural planning are key disciplines of Hubei Province. The undergraduate programs and graduate programs of urban and rural planning and architecture passed the professional evaluation of the country again in 2012 and 2016 respectively. The architecture is a major in "A Plan for Educating and Training Outstanding Engineers" of the country. Urban and rural planning is a discipline of "985 project". The comprehensive application of GIS, remote sensing technology and computer aid urban planning are deemed by the domestic peers as having opened up a new direction for school running. The art and design experimental center is demonstration center of Hubei province for teaching experiment.
The School engages in extensive exchange activities and develops Sino-USA Joint-design workshop in summer every year. Teachers of the School and foreign teachers offer joint design lessons. The School has cooperated with International Institute of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, the Netherlands (ITC) for more than 20 years and has developed joint teaching, cooperative scientific research and exchange with universities, organizations and scientific research institutions of UK, France, USA, South Korea, Italy, Germany, Australia and New Zealand as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan. The School was granted by the Ministry of Education to develop a five-year Sino-foreign cooperative education project from 2013 and cooperates with University of Dundee, UK to offer undergraduate architecture programs. Such project was extended for another five years in May 2017.
The School now has more than 940 undergraduate students and nearly 300 postgraduates. In addition, the School offers continuing education of various levels, such as adult diploma education, seminars and short-term training classes. Focusing on the objective of cultivating high-level talents with profound knowledge bases, of broad calibers and with strong abilities, the School continues deepening the education and teaching reform and cultivates international digitalized innovative talents who have profound knowledge in human culture by virtue of the complete discipline system and deep cultural background, achieving great success. Students of the School have participated in many domestic and international contests and won prizes. The prizes include "UNESCO Award" of International Union of Architects (IUA) which is the highest award of IUA, Red Dot Award, German IF Design Award and Excellent Work Prize of LITE-ON Award.

School of Art and Design of Wuhan University of Technology
Art discipline of Wuhan University of Technology art discipline was founded as early as in 1987 and mainly cultivates the high-level art and design talents required for theoretical studies of the art and design field, the design innovation and promotion of cultural art development, industrial progress and urban construction through cross-discipline. The School of Art and Design is the first professional institute in Central South China that has doctor station of arts in design, postdoctoral research institute on arts and the right to grant master of engineering in industrial design. Its design discipline is key discipline of Hubei Province. At present, the School has doctor station of two first-level disciplines, i.e. Design Science and Artistic Theory. The art education under doctor station of Artistic Theory is the art discipline platform of Degree Committee Office of Hubei Provincial People's Government and is cultivating high-level talents for Wuhan Conservatory of Music and Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. Currently, the School has postdoctoral research institute of the two first-level disciplines: design science and artistic theory, has the master points of the three first-level disciplines: design science, artistic theory and fine arts and the right to grant MFA and master of engineering in industrial design. The School offers six undergraduate programs. Of which, the industrial design (product design) major and animation major are the national characteristic majors and the environmental design major and visual communication design major are provincial brand majors. "Art science" of Wuhan University of Technology ranks at 10th place among ranking of disciplines of China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center in 2009.
School of Art and Design of Wuhan University of Technology currently has 1216 undergraduate students, 411 postgraduate students and 48 doctoral candidates. It now has 110 faculty members, including 23 professors, 10 doctoral tutors and 48 associate professors. One of the teachers is member of teaching guidance committee for design science major under the Ministry of Education, one of them is vice-chairman of teaching guidance committee for animation and digital media major under the Ministry of Education, three of them are members of the national teaching guidance committee and sub-committee for MFA, four of them are international chair professors of "Chutian Scholar" and one of them are the international chair professor of WUT. The School has successively made the following achievements: 2 national quality courses, 2 national public video courses, more than 20 state-level teaching materials in the "11th Five-Year" Plan and "12th Five-Year" Plan, more than 30 national, ministerial and provincial research projects, national level teaching team, national pilot area for talents cultivation, provincial pilot project for outstanding innovation talents cultivation, provincial experimental teaching demonstration center and provincial intangible cultural heritage research center. It runs the professional journal Art and Design Research which is in pubic circulation.
School of Art and Design of WUT has established long-term academic and educational as well as scientific research cooperation relationship with Cardiff University (UK), University of Art & Design Helsinki (Finland), Purdue University (USA), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), University of Tsukuba (Japan), Seoul National University (South Korea),  Konkuk University (South Korea), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, National Taiwan University of Arts, Tsinghua University, China Central Academy of Fine Arts and China Academy Of Art and other renowned colleges and universities.

Department of Design, Hubei Institute of Fine Arts
To promote the development of art education and meet the needs of the society on art talents, Jiang Lanpu, Tang Yijing and Xu Ziheng established the Wuchang Art School which was renamed as "Private Wuchang School of Arts" in 1930. This is the first modern art education institution in Hubei and the birthplace of the earliest art education in modern China. And in October 1958, the Hubei Art Institute was founded. The Department of Fine Arts is divided into four majors, i.e. industrial art, traditional Chinese painting, oil painting and sculpture; with the development of times, the original major of pattern was faded away and replaced by "industrial art". Li Yifu is the Deputy Director of Department of Fine Arts and the Head of Teaching and Research Section. There are 6 teachers in the Teaching and Research Section.
The major of industrial art adheres to the principle of "being nation-oriented, folk-oriented and locally oriented and taking the nationalization road; stressing the present not the past, making the past serve the present, valuing Chinese things instead of foreign ones and making foreign things serve China; making close integration of theory and practice, politics and business", and it requires the students to systematically master the basic knowledge necessary for the design and manufacture of arts and crafts and have a profound understanding of the heritage of ethnic arts and crafts. The major of decoration requires the students to have higher capacity of decorative art design, be familiar with printing process, master the printing technology, and be capable of design and teaching work in this major; and the major of dyeing and weaving requires the students to be familiar with the technological process and be capable of design and teaching work in this major. Here, inheriting tradition and developing practical skills are significantly important.
In twenty-first Century, the Department of Design has entered a stage of all-round development. In June 2006, the departments of the School were adjusted. After the adjustment, the Department of Design becomes a large comprehensive teaching department centering on the major of visual communication design, covering the major of printing graphic design and photography and integrating junior college students, undergraduates and postgraduates. The Department sets up many teaching and researching institutions, including teaching and research section of graphic design, teaching and research section of printing graphic design, teaching and research section of design practice, photography studio, packaging container studio, expert design center and Hubei Folk Art Institute. And it has over 30 teachers and over 700 students (junior college students, undergraduates and postgraduates), reaching an unprecedented scale.
With the coming of electronic information age, the curriculum changes, so that the curriculum reform would not fall behind. The changes in the basic courses given by the Department of Basic Course of the School are as follows: the "pattern" with times brand is weakened, while the emerging "graphic creativity" is included in the curriculum system; relevant computer software applications are used in the classroom as aided design; "container modeling" is re-included in packaging course; and courses of video, animation and website design, etc. the signs of Internet era, are incorporated into the new curriculum system.
At the same time, the construction of construction of professional disciplines of the Department of Design has made great achievements. In 2001, the Artistic Design was listed as a provincial key discipline during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" period; in 2006, it was listed as a provincial key discipline during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period; and in 2009, the major of Artistic Design was rated as a feature major by the Ministry of Education of the PRC; in 2010, the course "Poster Advertising Design" was rated as a provincial excellent course.
In this period of rapid development, the Department of Design has an important impact on the domestic counterparts. The leaders of the Department of Design are elected as members of Graphic Design Art Committee of Chinese Artists Association and play an important role in the relevant industry associations; the teachers and students of the Department have participated in exhibitions of various levels and win many national and provincial awards. And the graduation design exhibition every year attracts many counterparts and is considered as the sign of educational reform; it's also a platform for employers to identify talents and for merchants to find business opportunities.
Since 2006, the "East+ West College Students' International Poster Biennale" sponsored by Hubei Institute of Fine Arts and hosted by the Department of Design has been held for three times in succession. It is favored and admired by both domestic and foreign students and has become a key brand image of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts with a strong influence.

The art discipline of College of Art and Design of Wuhan Textile University (the "College") was founded as early as in the beginning of 1980s and is one of the earliest colleges that set up art design in central China.
Upon development of over thirty years, the College has gradually developed a set of its own education concept, college-running characteristics and teaching system, has a team of "double qualified teachers" who are dedicated and innovative and has established good reputation and brand image across China. The College of Art and Design now offers one undergraduate program: design science. It includes six concentrations: fiber art design, visual communication art design, environmental art design, public art design, investment on and appreciation of artwork, product design. Of which, the art design major is national characteristic major, and design science is key discipline of Hubei Province and advantageous characteristic discipline group of Hubei Province.
The College of Art and Design is dominated by contemporary art and design ideas, bases on the traditional cultural spirit of China and pays attention to thick foundation of the discipline, cross-discipline and the integration of the following eight aspects: integration of design education and art, integration of design education and innovative thinking, integration of design education and humanistic spirit of China, integration of design education and thick foundations of the discipline, integration of design education and non-intellectual factors, integration of design education and technology, integration of design education and hands-on skills and practical ability and integration of design education and innovation ability. The College endeavors to set up the talents cultivation system that comprehensively cultivates their thinking ability, hands-on ability, practical ability and innovation ability.
In recent years, the College has made remarkable achievements in research on art creation and teaching research. The teaching research project Research on Reform and Practices of Art Design Education and Teaching Under Background of Creative Industries has won first prize of Hubei Province for teaching achievements in 2008 and the project Construction and Practice of Creative and Productive Design Talents Cultivation Platform has won second prize of Hubei Province for teaching achievements in 2012.Its environment design artworks have won the Excellence Award of National Art Exhibition. The College now has seven national level projects which are ongoing. Two of them are sponsored by National Social Science Fund, one is sponsored by China National Arts Fund, one is cultural art research project of the Ministry of Culture of PRC and three are humanities and social science research projects of the Ministry of Education. The College has published more than 20 monographs and textbooks.
It now has 64 faculty members, including 5 professors, 31 associate professors and 23 supervisors of postgraduate. It has 5 distinguished professors of Chutian Scholars, one Chutian Student and two distinguished professors employed from both at home and abroad. The College now has nearly 200 postgraduate students. The College has been always attaching high importance to creating the academic atmosphere and actively develops various large research and innovation activities in recent years. In the recent five years, the College has successively held fiber art exhibition in University of California at Davis, Sino-USA Design Work Exhibition and other high-level major academic exhibition and exchange activities both at home and abroad. The College has tapped creative design talents for art design education and industry, promoted dialogue between the higher learning institutions and industries and set up a high-level international exchange platform for design of China. The College has actively participated in a series of academic exhibition in recent years and successively organized some academic seminars, such as the national annual award forum of environmental art design and international symposium of China-Korea fashion industry, forcefully promoting the academic research of Wuhan Textile University and enhancing its influences in Central South China and across China.

School of Art Design of Wuhan Media and Communications College of Huazhong Normal University
The School of Art Design is one of the characteristic schools or departments of Wuhan Media and Communications College of Huazhong Normal University and offers four-year undergraduate programs of visual communication design (print media design, advertisement planning and design), environmental art design (indoor design and landscape design) and fine art design for drama, film and television (stage art design). Currently, it has students of 1120.
The School of Art Design adheres to the purpose of teaching and educating people, emphasizes the dominant role of teaching and forms good soft environment through a variety of colorful activities. Meanwhile, it improves the teaching methods and means under the guidance of informatization, continuously optimizes the teaching contents, comprehensively enhances the teaching quality and constructs scientific, systemic and practical course system and practical teaching system with system building as the fundamental.
The School of Art design orients at cultivation of "applied" talents, bases the market demands to formulate feasible talents cultivation plan, continuously consolidates the foundations for students to develop hands-on ability, explores the industry-university-research institute cooperative school-running mode and endeavors to improve the teaching quality. According to the follow-up survey, the graduates are generally praised by the employers. For instance, Zhu Yawen has become the young backbone of Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd. In recent years, the average employment rate of graduates of the School has reached more than 90% and up to 65% of them find employment roughly in line with their major. The employment rate has been raking among top three of Wuhan Media and Communications College of Huazhong Normal University for five consecutive years.

Gemmological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan)
The Gemmological Institute is set up upon approval of the former Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources and a higher learning institution with cultivating high-level jewelry talents, promoting progress of gem technology and serving development of gem industry as its mission.
In 1988, the Institute cooperated with Fellowship of Gemological Association and introduced the internationally advanced FGA training system, a groundbreaking event in jewelry education of China. In 1994, the Institute successfully launched its own first gem and diamond certificate program--vocational training system of Gemmological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) for gem appraiser and created GIC brand. By end of 2013, the people coming to the Institute to pursue the GIC certificate were cumulatively more than 30,000 person-times and that pursuing FGA and DGA certificates were also more than one thousand person-times. The students were from gem QC station and various gem companies across mainland China and even the gem industry in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Hence, the Institute is honored as "cradle of gem education".
The Institute began to offer undergraduate education in gem from 1994 and was the first one to successively set up undergraduate program, master program and doctoral program of gem type in China and systemically construct the complete diploma education system that aims at cultivating high-level gem and jewelry talents. At present, the Institute offers two undergraduate majors: gem and material technology (national characteristic major), jewelry design; four master programs: gem, material engineering (gem material), design science and art design; one doctor major: gem science. Of which, design science is key discipline of Hubei province and "Gem and Jewelry Inheritance and Innovative Development Research Center" is key research base of humanities and social sciences of Hubei Province. The Institute attaches great importance to running the Institute internationally and has established and maintained close teaching and research cooperation and exchange relationship with international mainstream gem institutions. At present, the Institute has established cooperation relationship in joint students cultivation, teacher exchange and visit, technology cooperation and academic exchange with Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD), University for the Creative Arts (UCA), INSEEC, RENNES School of Business (ESC), International Gemmological Institute (ING), School of Art Design of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and gem and jewelry education institution of other famous universities. Close combination of industry, university and research institute and serving the gem industry and local economic development is distinctive feature of the Institute. Apart from training and delivering thousands of professional techical experts for the industry, the Institute has also set up the most authoritative gem testing institution in China and set up gem testing laboratories in Wuhan, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhushan and Yichang to offer professional testing service for hundreds of gem and jewelry enterprises. The gem identification instruments developed and produced by the Institute have won many national patents, are sold in many countries and regions and have good reputation in gem industry of China. Hubei Zhushan Turquoise Resources Conservation and Orderly Development Project led by the Institute has become the first industry of Zhushan County, making the value of turquoise increase by tens of times. Products of nearly 5 Billion Yuan of Hubei Yichang International Gem Industrial Park constructed with support of the Institute are directly sold in the international market. First phase of Wuhan Huangpi District Chow Tai Fook Gem Cultural Industry Park with annual output of more than 10 Billion Yuan has been built and put into operation in September 2014. "Lumo Road Gem Cultural Street" and "Wuhan · Gem Valley of China" that the Institute participates in planning and promotes (formally started in October 2014) will exert great influence on development of gem cultural industry and economic restructuring of Wuhan.

Wuhan Institute of Design and Sciences (WIDS)
Founded in 2004, WIDS undergoes two development stages: school of art design of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts and Chutian School of Huazhong Agricultural University. Upon approval of the Ministry of Education, it was formally renamed as Wuhan Institute of Design and Sciences (WIDS) in 2015. It was approved to admit students with reference to independent undergraduate art school in 2016 and has developed into an undergraduate institute with "design and engineering" as its characteristics. WIDS now has six schools: Jackie Chan School of Film and TV, School of Environmental Design, School of Art Design, School of Food and Biotechnology, School of Business and School of Information Engineering. It now has more than 8300 students and students have won more than 450 prizes in provincial level or above competitions in 2016, including 302 national level prizes.

WIDS running conditions: The campus covers an area of 753.05mu and is located beside the beautiful Tangxun Lake. WIDS was planned and designed by both domestic and international famous artists. So it has charm of both eastern and western gardens and the buildings integrate the modern style and classic temperament. WIDS has complete teaching and living facilities: modern teaching building, laboratory building, library, art gallery, pottery museum, gymnasium, stadium, recreational and sports center for college students, student apartments and canteens and so on. The total construction area is 250,700m². It has nearly 200 rooms of advanced film and TV media training center, environmental art design center, experimental teaching center of food and biology, experimental teaching center of computer and animation studio, digital image studio and stop-motion animation studio and set up 79 stable off-campus practice bases. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 48,159,000 Yuan and the library has 748,000 copies of paper collections.
Faculty: WIDS has high quality faculty. It now has 474 full-time teachers and 162 teachers employed from other institutions. WIDS sets up the post of chief professor for each major to comprehensively take charge of the major development. It flexibly hires high-level talents from both home and abroad: inviting Mr. Jackie Chan to be Dean of Jackie Chan School of Film and TV, hiring Feng Xiaogang, Zhang Guoli and Bao Manzhu and other renowned social personage, experts and professors to work as chair professors. The teachers have made fruitful achievements in teaching research and scientific research. The full-time teachers have published high level papers, applied 211 patents and won 51 prizes of provincial level or above in 2016.
Disciplines and majors: Oriented at industrial needs, WIDS makes use of the advantageous disciplines, characteristic majors and good quality teaching resources of Huazhong Agricultural University and Hubei Institute of Fine Arts which are century-old prestigious institute to offer 31 undergraduate majors and five college level majors. It has formed six major discipline clusters: film and TV, art design, environmental design, food and biology, economy and management, information technology, covering such six disciplinary categories as art, engineering, literature, economy, management and agriculture. Based on the development idea of professional clustering, WIDS promotes overlapping, penetration and fusion of disciplines and continuously enhances the connotation of disciplines. One discipline has been approved to provincial level key (cultivation) discipline, one major was approved as "pilot project of comprehensive major reform of Hubei province" and two disciplines were approved as "plan project for cultivating talents of strategic emerging (pillar) industries in Hubei province". WIDS and Hubei University of Technology formally started the joint training program of postgraduates from March 2017 and began the joint training of postgraduate of arts from 2017 on.
Exchange and cooperation: WIDS has international perspective in institute-running and actively develops international cooperation and exchange. It has set up good education cooperation and academic exchange relationship with many universities in France and Italy. It has become the sister-institute of Hanseo University, South Korea and successively sent nearly 500 students to exchange and study at Hanseo University. Department of Art Design of Wuhan Polytechnic
Department of Art Design of Wuhan Polytechnic (the Department) now offers programs of three majors: environmental art design, product art design and digital media art design. Of which, the environmental art design major is a provincial training base and the environmental art design (landscape design concentration) is a provincial characteristic major and national experimental major of modern apprenticeship. It now has 32 staffs and one Chutian Famous Teacher. 29 of them are full-time teachers, 15 of them have senior professional titles and 11 have intermediate professional titles. 90% of them are double qualified teachers and the number of students is 798. It has built more than 10 on-campus training centers such as studio, professional darkroom, pottery room, graphic center, models room, structure and material room, and the indoor design studio, landscape design studio, visual communication design studio, animation design studio, product styling and design studio and photography studio. Many creative product bases of enterprises like "Hubei Boke Landscape Art Design Engineering Co., Ltd. Third Design Department", "Wuhan Kunlun Decoration & Design Co., Ltd. Design Branch" and "Guangzhou Yuyuanliang Metal Product Co., Ltd. Creativity Studio" are located on campus. It has many off-campus practical teaching bases like "Hubei Boke Landscape Art Design Engineering Co., Ltd. Teaching Base", "Luodan Bride Wedding Photography Company" and "Wuhan Houxiang Design Firm" and so on, and established long-term cooperation relationship with more than 20 enterprises.
Guided by "imitating the nature, respecting the tradition and enriching knowledge", the Department sets up professional studio project course teaching system, updates the education and teaching concepts, introduces the cultural contents into teaching, improves the teaching standard and assessment system of project course and constructs the virtuous circle model of enterprises, universities and research institutes to cultivate specialized technical talents who have artistic aesthetics and creativity ability and good moral characters. Apart from general major courses, the Department also offers attractive cross-disciplinary selective courses, extensive and profound Tanshizhai academic cultural lectures and colorful activities and diverse international exchanges for students. Students have won many gold and silver prizes in many international and domestic competitions.
