6 Projects “Designed in Wuhan” Won “Nobel Prize” in Engineering Consulting Field

Annual meeting of International Federation of Consulting Engineering (FIDIC) in 2016 was held in September 26 in Marrakech, the ancient city of Morocco. And 21 engineering projects over the world won the prize, including 11 Chinese engineering, among which 6 of them were explored and designed by enterprises located in Wuhan or in Hubei province.

These 6 engineering projects include: Middle Route Project of South-North Water Transfer Project designed by Changjiang Institute of Survey, Planning, Design and Research accompanied by Hubei Provincial Water Resources and Hydropower Planning Survey and Design Institute, Jinshajiang Xiluodu Hydropower Plant designed and constructed mainly by China Three Gorges Construction and Management Co., Ltd, Ningbo railway hub northern link line Yong river bridge designed by China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., Ltd, Guiyang-Guangzhou high speed railway, Qianjiang channel and connection project Qianjiang Tunnel designed by China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., Ltd and Ma'anshan Yangtze River Bridge designed by China Railway Major Bridge Reconnaissance & Design Institute Co., Ltd.

It’s easy to find that these awarded projects covering the specialty of Wuhan engineering design which has already ascended to the world’s highest such as large-scale water conservancy and hydropower, bridge, high-speed rail and tunnel. And the infrastructure construction composed by a series of hardware such as bridge, tunnel, high-speed rail and hydropower station could not be finished without the support of engineering consulting.

Take the Middle Route Project of South-North Water Transfer Project as example; it is world’s largest and longest cross basin water diversion project and the entire line extending through four basins of Yangtze River, Huaihe River, Yellow River and Haihe River with great engineering difficulty. During the early stage, it has undergone large numbers of investigation, planning, design and scientific research. Since December 2014, it has drawn water from the east bank of Danjiangkou Reservoir at the milled and upper reaches of Han River, the largest tributary of Yangtze River to Beijing for over 5 billion m3, benefiting more than 40 million people in Henan, Hebei, Beijing and Tianjin in less than 2 years.

Yong river bridge project was finished at the end of year 2014 and is the railway hybrid girder cable-stayed bridge with the world’s largest span. For the original structural design of the design team, its construction could be completed with convenience and saved an investment of 120 million yuan.

In order to award the engineering project that contributes to global economy and improvement in people’s living standard, FIDIC would hold the annual engineering project selection, since it has been organized by most authorized consulting engineers worldwide, the prize given by this association has been recognized as the “Nobel Prize” in International engineering consulting field. FIDIC was set up in 1913 and its member associations come from 106 countries and areas. After the inquiry, the journalist found that before then the engineering project designed by Wuhan would win this prize almost every year.
