The First Smart Sponge City Forum and the Opening Ceremony of Wuhan University Sponge City Research Center Successfully Held

From 18 to 19 December, the First Smart Sponge City Forum and the Opening Ceremony of Wuhan University Sponge City Research Center was held in Wuhan. This forum was co-organized by Wuhan Sponge City Construction CO.,LTD and Wuhan Xinfeng Opto-electronics CO.,LTD and sponsored by Water Resources Commission, China Society of Natural Resources, Water Industry Branch, China Civil Engineering Society, Water Resources Commission, Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, Wuhan Rural and Urban Construction Commission, Wuhan University Sponge City Research Center and Water Issue Joint Research Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The theme of this forum is “Challenges Facing the Construction and Development of Sponge City”.

Meanwhile during the forum, the Opening Ceremony of Wuhan University Sponge City Research Center was successfully held and participated by distinguished guests including Mr. Liu Changming, Mr.Tao Shu and Mr Xiajun, the academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Mao Zhi, Mr. Zhangyong and Mr. Niu Xinqiang, the academicians from Chinese Academy of Engineering,the academician from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Guo Shenglian, vice-governor of Hubei Province, Mr. Li Jiancheng, vice-president of Wuhan University, Mr. Zhang Xiangwei, deputy director of Planning Department, Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. Wang Pucha, deputy director of Wuhan Rural and Urban Construction Commission, Mr. Zhangquan, director of Water Project Branch, China Academy of Urban Planning and Design and Mr. Ye Yong, president of Beijing Tepia Technology Co.,Ltd. They have together witnessed the opening of Wuhan University Sponge City Research Center and posed for a group photo.

In the report session of this two-day forum, participating scholars, experts and entrepreneurs have delivered wonderful reports and engaged in fierce
debate on all aspects relevant to Sponge City programmes. Based on the actualities of representative cities such as Shanghai and Wuhan, the experts who reported have discussed about the challenges facing sponge city construction and development from the perspectives of urban hydrology, planning and practice, monitoring and evaluation, urban flood, and urban water ecology. They especially reached consensus on hydro-logical support for fundamental research into sponge city building, urban construction, water affairs and multi-deciplinary integration.

It is learned that it was the first time that the Smart Sponge City Forum had been hosted with around 400 participants and 35 reports delivered. The organizing committee is planning to hold the forum every two years, aimed at setting up a platform facilitating  “government, industry, academia, research and application” exchanges and improvement, building consensus among government leaders, scholars, experts and enterprises representatives. It is also a service platform with resources that are diversified, multi-layered and multi-faceted for promoting urban sustainability and living conditions improvement. Mr. Xiajun was invited to give the concluding speech in which he underlined the significance of constructing smart sponge cities and pointed out the bigger difficulties and challenges that may arise in the future. Led by scientific innovation, the forum and the Research Centre will make joint efforts to strengthen the basic research into sponge city construction and through innovating our “government, industry, academia, research and application” mechanism, build themselves into the high-end think tank for sponge city construction in our country.
