INNOCAD architectural practice and its multidisciplinary team, consisting of fashion and product designers as well as sound and media designers, are the winners of the “Kanonenhalle” competition. The task of designing a new information centre for the Graz Tourist Office and creating an attractive entrance area for the Styrian State Armoury building required an approach that went beyond mere architectural concerns. As a result, the whole area now possesses its own comprehensive corporate identity, which unites aspects of architecture, media and merchandising. The concept is based around “Murnockerl” (river pebbles) that act as a contextual link, thematic metaphor, corporate symbol and key element. Similar to their actual structure, the organic form of the “stones” is architecturally represented in layers. This grid-like surface creates distinctive spaces and shapes and can also be used for shop furnishings as well as for any other kind of product presentation.

The information centre’s new design reflects the positive spirit of the City of Graz as City of Design and has increased international attention. The project not only won an award as “Public Building of the Year” at the 2013 Leaf Interior Design Awards in Berlin, but also earned the title of “Overall Winner”. Moreover, ROLLING STONES won an award at the 35th Annual Interiors Awards in 2014 in New York and was honoured at the 2014 Architizer A+ Awards and FX International Interior Design Awards.

“This idea is entirely in line with the City of Design’s concept, namely to turn creativity into a basic element, to promote it sustainably and to live it”, says city councillor Sonja Grabner.

Minister of Culture Christian Buchmann adds, “The Canon Hall’s new design is an example of how important sustainable design is for the development of urban culture. The co-operation between Creative Industries Styria, Graz Tourist Office and Universalmuseum Joanneum within the framework of the competition is proof of the innovative spirit of the City of Graz as a City of Design.”
