Release time:2017-09-10 14:42

The Panlong City Site Museum is located at the former site of Panlong City, at No. 1 Panlong Avenue, Panlong-cheng Economic Development Zone, Huangpi District, Wuhan. Panlong City was the first ever early Shang-dynasty city site to be found in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and one of the best-preserved such sites from the period. It is renowned for providing amazing cultural discoveries, and having remains of the ancient city exposed aboveground, and has been called “the root of Wuhan City”. In 2006, the site was named a preservation target in the national 11th Five-Year Plan, as a Major Historical and Cultural Site for National Protection. Existing around 15th century BCE, with an area about 1.1 square kilometers, Panlong City is among the earliest cities known in China.

Panlong City has a history of over 3500 years, and is the first ancient city from Shang dynasty to be discovered in the Yangtze region. It has an area of 75,400 square meters. The site has a palace complex in the northeastern part of the city, and workshops, settlements and small tomb sites scattered around the city. Numerous fine bronzewares, jade implements, and potteries have been discovered from the site. They include a ceremonial bronze axe head, which has the unusual length of 41 centimeters, and a 94 centimeter-long jade dagger-axe, the largest of such an artifact ever found. These ceremonial weapons demonstrate the Shang empire’s military strength in the southern regions.

From an academic perspective, the well-preserved state of Panlong, including its fine bronze works, advanced agriculture, craftsmanship, commerce, and the civil facilities, makes the city extremely valuable to our understanding on the history of urban civilizations.

Construction on the Panlong City Site Museum was started in 2016, and the main works will be completed within 2017. Progress is also being made on the National Panlong City Archaeological Park. According to Wan Lin, director of the museum, visitors will be able to pre-book opportunities to participate in the archaeological excavation of the site. The central area of the site will be open to the public by the end of 2017.

It is reported that once completed, the museum will become the first smart museum in Hubei that utilizes modern technologies to deliver multimedia information in its exhibitions and its website, using media including text, images, audio, video, 3D artifact models, and virtual tours.
