Release time:2017-09-10 10:58

On June 29, 2017, with the strong support of Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, the Wuhan Municipal Government delegation successfully held promotion activities for Wuhan to join the " City of Design " in Creative Cities Network at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. Wuhan has also signed an agreement with the sister city of Entebbe, Uganda, and it will join hands with Entebbe to "apply for becoming a creative city".

The City Design Industry Promotion Office and the Entebbe Municipal Council of Uganda jointly signed the Agreement on Cooperation in the Application to Join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

In August 2014, Wuhan and Entebbe in Uganda became sister cities. In recent years, Wuhan has given continuous help to Entebbe through free vocational training in information technology, carpentry, machinery manufacturing and other aspects, and the two cities have frequent interaction in cultural and sports activities like dragon boat race and marathon.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network covers seven different themes, including Design, Literature, Music, Crafts and Folk Art, Film, Media Arts, Gastronomy. Wuhan has its design advantages while Entebbe shows its advantages in crafts and folk art. Wuhan will help Entebbe in the training of designers and other aspects, and the two cities will make joint efforts to "apply for becoming a creative city".

On June 15, Wuhan officially submitted its application to the UNESCO to become the “City of Design” in Creative Cities Network, with "Revitalization of Old City" as its slogan. It hopes to take this as an opportunity to share the valuable experiences of other cities around the world, so as to inject new impetus into Wuhan's urban development, provide new quality of urban life for Wuhan residents, and cultivate new generations for Wuhan to become a creative design city.

Mr. Eric Falt, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Public Information, highly appreciated the work done by Wuhan in application for City of Design and cultural heritage protection, and supported Wuhan to "apply for becoming a creative city”. He said that China has become an important strategic partner of UNESCO, as it supports UNESCO in many programs, helps Africa to develop and provides substantial investment in South-South cooperation. At present, 116 cities from 54 countries have joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, and many countries have made creativity and culture the core of their development plans. He believes that it's in line with UNESCO's concept of Priority Africa for Wuhan to help Entebbe to join the Creative Cities Network.

From June 29 to July 1, during the 11th Annual Meeting of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Wuhan Creative City Application Office has carried out one to one deep communication with the members of "City of Design", and has publicized and promoted Wuhan’s concept of "applying for becoming a creative city”. Next, Wuhan will also cooperate with UNESCO in the protection of cultural heritage.

In recent years, Wuhan has held many creative design activities, such as Design Biennale, Creative Design Bazaar, and creative design competitions for university students and citizens. Once Wuhan succeeds in "applying for becoming a creative city", it will build an creative city demonstration area integrating urban ecology, historical culture and creative services along the Yangtze River; and it will promote the Wuhan Design Biennale, and hold creative design competition for citizens; what's more, it will build demonstrative creative community and improve community residents' quality of life with creative design.
