Release time:2017-10-17 10:38

"The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, has invited the Wuhan Land Use and Urban Spatial Planning Research Center to participate in the post-quake reconstruction program. "

The center will develop the Bidur Comprehensive Development Plan (2017-2035) for Nepal. This is the first time that a planning institution in Wuhan has been involved in the urban planning and development for another country and also the first time for UN-HABITAT to have invited a Chinese planning unit to join in a construction aid project.

Bidur, 68 kilometers away from the country's capital Kathmandu, has a population of 26,700 residents. In 2015, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck Nepal, and Bidur suffered heavy losses in the disaster. As required by UN-HABITAT, the construction aid project will focus on the comprehensive design, introduce advanced ideas and methods, and ensure its long-term sustainable development.

The center received an invitation and conducted initial investigations in Bidur from April 29 to May 9. According to the agreement, the center will give a report on the Bidur Comprehensive Development Plan (2017-2035) to UN-HABITAT and the Bidur municipal government in February, 2018. It will include eight development strategies on its industrial economy, comprehensive transport, basic infrastructure, public services, population increase, cultural tourism, comprehensive disaster prevention, and ecological control.

Zhang Zhenshan, the UN-HABITAT representative in China, said that the Wuhan planning team was chosen for the project because in the past, Wuhan has showcased its achievements internationally in the field of design and planning. Last year, the Zhongshan Avenue renovation project was the only one from Asia to win the 2016 ISOCARP Award for Excellence, the highest level award in urban planning. Another project, the Wuhan East Lake Greenway, was promoted at Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.
