Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival

  Initiated in 1992, the Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China was jointly sponsored by units such as the International Liaison Bureau of the Ministry of Culture, the Department of Art of the Ministry of Culture, China Acrobats Association, China Performing Arts Agency, China Central Television, Wuhan Municipal People’s Government, and the Hubei Provincial International Culture Association. Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival is held every two years, and Wuhan is the permanent host city of the biennial event. The acrobatic art festival aims to provide outstanding acrobats across the world a place to compete fairly and equally, exchange skills through mutual learning, and develop innovative acrobatic arts, making Wuhan a bridge of friendship bringing together outstanding acrobats across the world. The emblem of the acrobatic art festival is a yellow crane heading a bowl against the background of Planet Earth. The image of a flying yellow crane represents Wuhan’s takeoff; the image of a yellow crane heading a bowl implies sophisticated acrobatic arts; the Planet Earth in the background shows the international outreach of the acrobatic art festival.
 
  Wuhan Acrobatics Hall

  Completed in 1992, it is the largest acrobatic hall in Asia, boasting a floor area of 6196 m2, an arena area of 255 m2, 3100 seats, 21 meters in height, and a 250 m2 of supporting training space. It is equipped with electronic display screen. It has successfully hosted numerous events and competitions such as multiple international acrobatic art festivals, and large-scaled artistic and theatrical performances, as well as national Wushu challenge matches and boxing matches.
 
  Form of Competition

  Acrobatic competition is carried out under the form of public performance. Competing categories include stage acrobatics, aerial acrobatics, magic, burlesque and beast training. It gives out Yellow Crane gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as Fragrant Grass (juvenile) gold, silver and bronze medals. In addition, the art festival also has a number of honorary and honorable mention awards. Given its advanced venue facilities, Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China has formed its own competition rules and prize awarding methods which are basically in line with other international competitions.
Known for its high levels of difficulty and authority throughout the international acrobatic circle, Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China is one of the top four international acrobatic festivals, equally prestigious as Monte Carlo International Circus Festival of Monaco, and Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain of France.
 
  Previous Festivals

  The First Art Festival


  The First Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China was held in Wuhan Acrobatics Hall on September 6th through 12th, 1992. Thirty-four programs of 23 troupes from 14 countries participated. It gave out 3 Yellow Crane gold medals, 6 silver medals, 9 bronze medals, and a number of special performance awards. Program Women Trick Cycling from Wuhan Acrobatic Troupe of China, program Flying Trapeze from Pyongyang Acrobatic Troupe of North Korea, and program Aerial Gymnastics from Qiqihar Acrobatic Troupe of China won gold medals. 
The Second Art Festival

      The Second Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China was held in Wuhan Acrobatics Hall on October 25th through 31st, 1994. Twenty-eight programs of 23 troupes from 11 countries participated. It gave out 3 Yellow Crane gold medals, 6 silver medals, 9 bronze medals, and 10 honorable mention awards. Program Flying Trapeze from Pyongyang Acrobatic Troupe of North Korea, program Red Plum Reflected on Snow from Wuhan Acrobatic Troupe of China, and program Trick Cycling from Shandong Acrobatic Troupe of China won gold medals.

  The Third Art Festival

  The Third Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China was held in Wuhan Acrobatics Hall on October 26th through November 1st, 1996. Competitors from China, North Korea, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine, Germany, Egypt, Hungary, Canada, France, Belgium, Mongolia, the United States, and Indonesia participated. It gave out 3 Yellow Crane gold medals, 6 silver medals, 9 bronze medals, and 7 honorable mention awards. Program Ancient Hooping Technique from Wuhan Acrobatic Troupe of China, program Flying Women from Pyongyang National Acrobatic Troupe of North Korea, and program High Wire from Hungary won gold medals.

  The Fourth Art Festival

  The Fourth Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China was held in Wuhan Acrobatics Hall on October 28th through November 3rd, 2000. Twenty-eight brilliant programs of 23 troupes from 12 countries and regions participated in the competition or exhibition. Programs covered the five major acrobatic categories of stage acrobatics, aerial acrobatics, beast training, magic, and burlesque, and are of high levels of artistic standard.

  The Fifth Art Festival

  The Fifth Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China was held in Wuhan Acrobatics Hall on November 1st through 7th, 2002. Twenty-eight programs of 25 troupes from 13 countries including Russia, North Korea, the United States, Japan and Ukraine participated in the competition. Program entries covered performance categories of stage, aerial, beast training, magic, and burlesque, among which were many excellent and creative programs from all over the world, showcasing the new height of contemporary acrobatic arts.

  The Sixth Art Festival

  The Sixth Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China was held in Wuhan Acrobatics Hall on October 29th through November 5th, 2004. Thirty one programs from 12 countries and regions including Russia, North Korea, the United States, Brazil, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Ukraine, Mongolia, China and Taiwan, China participated in the competition and exhibition, among which were 21 international programs and 10 Chinese programs; 28 adult programs and 3 juvenile programs.

  The Seventh Art Festival

  The Seventh Wuhan International Acrobatic Art Festival of China will be held in Wuhan on October 27th through November 2nd, 2006. This year’s acrobatic festival will mainly consist of four parts, namely competition performance, festival performance, burlesque performance art seminar and a series of mass cultural events. By then, Wuhan Acrobatics Hall will host 11 performance sessions, covering the five major categories of acrobatic arts namely aerial acrobatics, stage acrobatics, magic, burlesque, and beast training. Twenty-four programs from 10 countries and regions will be invited to compete and perform. The competition will have the adult group competing for Yellow Crane gold, silver and bronze medals and the juvenile group competing for Fragrant Grass gold, silver and bronze medals. A new attraction of this year’s acrobatic festival is mass cultural events. During the acrobatic festival, acrobats from home and abroad will perform in places such as Hankou River Beach, Jiefang Park, some residential communities and rural areas.
