Art discipline of Wuhan University of Technology art discipline was founded as early as in 1987 and mainly cultivates the high-level art and design talents required for theoretical studies of the art and design field, the design innovation and promotion of cultural art development, industrial progress and urban construction through cross-discipline. The School of Art and Design is the first professional institute in Central South China that has doctor station of arts in design, postdoctoral research institute on arts and the right to grant master of engineering in industrial design. Its design discipline is key discipline of Hubei Province. At present, the School has doctor station of two first-level disciplines, i.e. Design Science and Artistic Theory. The art education under doctor station of Artistic Theory is the art discipline platform of Degree Committee Office of Hubei Provincial People's Government and is cultivating high-level talents for Wuhan Conservatory of Music and Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. Currently, the School has postdoctoral research institute of the two first-level disciplines: design science and artistic theory, has the master points of the three first-level disciplines: design science, artistic theory and fine arts and the right to grant MFA and master of engineering in industrial design. The School offers six undergraduate programs. Of which, the industrial design (product design) major and animation major are the national characteristic majors and the environmental design major and visual communication design major are provincial brand majors. "Art science" of Wuhan University of Technology ranks at 10th place among ranking of disciplines of China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center in 2009.

　　School of Art and Design of Wuhan University of Technology currently has 1216 undergraduate students, 411 postgraduate students and 48 doctoral candidates. It now has 110 faculty members, including 23 professors, 10 doctoral tutors and 48 associate professors. One of the teachers is member of teaching guidance committee for design science major under the Ministry of Education, one of them is vice-chairman of teaching guidance committee for animation and digital media major under the Ministry of Education, three of them are members of the national teaching guidance committee and sub-committee for MFA, four of them are international chair professors of "Chutian Scholar" and one of them are the international chair professor of WUT. The School has successively made the following achievements: 2 national quality courses, 2 national public video courses, more than 20 state-level teaching materials in the "11th Five-Year" Plan and "12th Five-Year" Plan, more than 30 national, ministerial and provincial research projects, national level teaching team, national pilot area for talents cultivation, provincial pilot project for outstanding innovation talents cultivation, provincial experimental teaching demonstration center and provincial intangible cultural heritage research center. It runs the professional journal Art and Design Research which is in pubic circulation.
School of Art and Design of WUT has established long-term academic and educational as well as scientific research cooperation relationship with Cardiff University (UK), University of Art & Design Helsinki (Finland), Purdue University (USA), Politecnico di Milano (Italy), University of Tsukuba (Japan), Seoul National University (South Korea),  Konkuk University (South Korea), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, National Taiwan University of Arts, Tsinghua University, China Central Academy of Fine Arts and China Academy Of Art and other renowned colleges and universities.

　　The School adheres to the discipline development concept of "diversity, interaction, harmony without uniformity", pays attention to broadening the student's international horizon and improving their comprehensive quality, cultivates multi-level art and design talents that have good professional quality and skills, team work spirit and sense of social responsibility.
